A Brown Bear Hitches A Ride On Top Of A Garbage Truck.

A brown bear has been filmed hitching a ride on top of a garbage truck near Los Alamos, New Mexico, traveling at least 5 miles before being able to make its escape up a tree.

According to Santa Fe National Forest spokeswoman Julie Anne Overton, the truck driver was picking up a dumpster when he heard a squeal and realized that the bear was on top of the truck.

The animal rode on top of the vehicle to a site where the Forest Service keeps a firefighting helicopter.

And here are the highlights:

Helicopter mechanic Evan Welsch, who took pictures of the bear, said that about 30 Forest Service and National Park workers had gathered around to watch the spectacle.

At some point someone suggested that the driver back up his vehicle near a tree to provide the animal with an escape route.

The plan was put into action and the bear climbed up the tree and remained up there for about an hour or two before eventually scurrying down and running off.
