A family could not believe the sight when they went to pick up their fluffy cat after a routine grooming session and found his fir completely shaved from head to foot.
Owner Natalie Thompson, 25, was shocked and angered when her cat Ollie’s fir was sheared, following his $75 spruce-up at a Pets at Home store in England.
When she went to pick up her four-year-old cat, Thompson cried as Ollie looked clearly traumatized by what had taken place.
1. Four-year-old cat Ollie was left completely bald following a routine grooming session.
Speaking about the incident, Thompson said:
When I saw what they had done to Ollie I just cried my eyes out. He looked distraught and a mess.
He is usually an outgoing cat but that has all changed since the incident and he seems traumatized.
We have two dogs as well and they don’t recognize him at all. They were pawing him around so I had to get him out of the way.
Ollie just kind of looks a little bit lost, he looks really sad. I can’t describe it — he’s just not himself.
2. Ollie used to be a fluffy ball of energy, but has been left traumatized since the incident.
He’s snuggling into each corner in the house, probably to keep warm. He’s used to having so much fur so going from that to nothing must be a big shock. He’s not stopped shivering either so he’s going to the vets.
Before his shave he was always wandering around woodland near our home. He’s usually such a lively cat and is always bringing birds and mice in.
Now I’ve had to get him a litter tray because I don’t want to force him outside because he’s got no fur at all.
He’s been groomed a few times and he’s been fine every time. He’s even been shaved a tiny bit before on his side and that’s it. In the past though he had fur to cover it but (this time) they left Ollie looking ridiculous.
I just feel really guilty and like it’s my fault for sending him for grooming.
3. Ollie has been seen snuggling into a ball in the corner of the house after he was shaved bald.
Thompson asked the store for an explanation, but did not receive a satisfactory answer. She was offered a refund and a gift voucher instead, but declined. She said:
I said to them “I don’t want your money”. It’s not about the money for the mistake but they replied “well you can go and buy him a jumper to put on”.
Speaking to The Daily Mail, Pets at Home offered this explanation:
Cats have a very delicate skin which can be easily torn or damaged.
So when a cat has a matted coat like Ollie’s it is sometimes necessary to clip the coat very close, using clippers designed specifically for use with cats, to avoid causing any damage to its skin.
Although our terms and conditions highlight that a close clip may be necessary for the welfare of the pet when it’s coat is matted, we appreciate that this can be quite upsetting for an owner, particularly if it isn’t what they were expecting.
4. Ollie, usually a lively and playful cat, has not been himself since he was shaved from head to foot.
