A $250 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest or for the rescue of a dog who was abandoned at a Louisiana gas station and was photographed running after his owner’s truck, desperately trying to catch up with it.
A witness took the picture, after she saw a man leave the dog on Highway 11 in Slidell, Louisiana, WDSU reports. The woman, Lorie Hollis, said that the owner yelled at the dog to “Go! Go over there!”.
Ms. Hollis added that the pet, a black German Shepherd mix, looked bewildered. He jumped up and put his paws on the pick-up truck’s tailgate.
1. This is the heartbreaking moment a German Shepherd desperately chased after the owner who abandoned him at a gas station on the side of a road in Slidell, Louisiana.
The canine gave chase after his owner’s truck drove off, doing his best to keep up.
Ms. Hollis told the Louisiana Humane Society that she attempted to follow the dog and truck with her own car and watched the pet cross two lanes of traffic as he tried to get to his owner.
However, after driving for a couple of miles, Ms. Hollis lost both the truck and the dog. She told WDSU:
My heart is broken. I am in shock that someone would treat a dog like this.
Jeff Dorson, a spokesman for the Louisiana Humane Society, said that it is unfortunately all too common for pet dogs to be abandoned and “left to fend for themselves” on back country roads or by the sides of highways. He told WDSU:
People can be cruel and heartless. If people feel they can no longer care for a pet, all they have to do is surrender him or her to a nearby rescue group or shelter.
2. A nearby woman snapped the photograph after she saw a man drop off the dog on Highway 11 (pictured) and yelled at his pet to “Go! Go over there!” The dog then gave chase after the truck drove off.
Mr. Dorson explained that when pets are abandoned in a “random location”, they have “almost zero” chance of survival. He said:
This is truly a cowardly act and a punishable offense.
The Louisiana Humane Society said that, once they find the abandoned German Shepherd, they will take custody of the pet and find him a home.
The Humane Society is also offering a $250 reward for any information which could help lead to the owner’s arrest or to the recovery of his abandoned dog.
