A mother-of-five who stabbed her neighbor to death after discovering that he was a pedophile has been convicted of manslaughter but cleared of murder.
Sarah Sands, 32, from London, England, attacked Michael Pleasted, 77, in his living room weeks after learning that he had abused young boys.
At the time of the attack, Pleasted was facing two charges of sexual assault and was being investigating on an allegation that he had abused a third boy. The man had already been convicted of other child sex offenses.
1. Sarah Sands, 32, pictured, attacked Michael Pleasted, 77, in his London apartment.
Sands said at her trial that she had visited Pleasted to ask him to admit his crimes and spare his young victims from having to appear in court.
However, when Pleasted opened the door, he rejected her plea and “smirked” as he responded that the boys were all liars who had ruined his life, Sands said.
At that point, Sands, who had armed herself with a knife, stabbed Pleasted eight times. Within hours of the incident, she surrendered to police, telling an officer:
Who houses a f****** pedophile on an estate, like, seriously? He was, like, asking for trouble.
After her trial, Sands was cleared of murder but convicted of manslaughter by reason of loss of control.
2. Wearing a hooded jumper, Sands was caught on CCTV going to Pleasted’s third floor apartment (pictured).
Sands lived on the same estate as Pleasted and sometimes visited to give him home-cooked food.
On November 29, 2014, she drank two bottles of wine and a small bottle of whisky, then armed herself with a knife and walked over to Pleastead’s flat.
Sands was filmed on security camera going to Pleasted’s third floor apartment. Twenty minutes later, she was filmed leaving the building with a bloodstained knife in her hand.
The woman then returned to her apartment and changed her bloodstained clothes. She told a neighbor to “pretend you never saw me”.
3. Twenty minutes later she left the building carrying a bloodstained knife in her left hand (circled).
Sands then took a cab to see her stepson Paul Penn and confessed to stabbing Pleasted.
Pleasted was found dead in his apartment on the next day, after Sands had surrendered to the police.
The jury deliberated for three days before deciding to clear Sands of murder and convicting her of the lesser offense of manslaughter. The sentencing will take place in September.
4. Detectives said Pleasted was stabbed in the chest in his flat in this street in Silvertown, east London.
