A ten-year-old Irish boy is hailed as a hero after clinging onto a moving SUV and refusing to let go until he rescued his sister from being abducted by a convicted child sex offender.
The criminal, who was on bail for robbery, tried to abduct the unidentified twelve-year-old girl on a country road near the village of Cullahill in County Laois, Ireland.
The girl was playing with her two little brothers near the family’s home on Wednesday morning when the man pulled over and asked for directions to the local priest’s house.
The man then jumped out of the stolen SUV and snatched the girl. However, her younger brother latched on the driver’s door and punched the would-be kidnapper through the open window, as the vehicle began to move away, The Irish Independent reports.
The brave ten-year-old managed to distract the kidnapper for long enough to allow his sister to jump out of the moving SUV.
The children’s father said the family were all too shocked to talk about the incident, but he did tell the newspaper that they was “extremely proud” of their 10-year-old son’s actions.
Irish state police (called gardaí) from three counties launched a manhunt after the incident on Wednesday morning and arrested the 34-year-old suspect just over 24 hours later.
The unidentified man is a convicted child sex offender, however he is not on the sex offenders list, as his offense dates back to the 1990s.
1. A convicted child sex offender attempted to abduct a twelve-year-old girl on this country road near the village of Cullahill in County Laois, Ireland.
The suspect is well-known to the Irish authorities, mostly for robbing priests’ houses and church poor boxes. He is described as “very volatile and dangerous” and has a number of convictions and is currently facing a number of robbery charges.
The suspect was jailed for four years in 2004, after pleading guilty to abducting a 14-year-old girl with whom he had been having a relationship at the time.
Authorities believe that the suspect stole the Nissan SUV in which he was traveling from a farmer in the village of Kilmacow in County Kilkenny on Tuesday evening.
On the following morning, the man showed up in Durrow, County Laois, where he begged for money at the parochial house.
He then traveled on to the village of Cullahill, where he filled up at a gas station. Police are investigating a report that the same man then broke into the local church and stole a collection box.

Shortly afterward, at around 11 am, the man came by the three children, who had a day off school.
Police launched a major operation and around 3 pm sent out an alert by the community text system, warning parents of the danger.
It is believed that officers staked out a church near Castlecomer in County Kilkenny and arrested the man shortly before noon on Thursday.
The suspect was still being held on Thursday night in Portlaoise garda (police) station and was expected to appear in court on Friday.
Authorities hope that the three children will help to identify the suspect during an identity parade.
