A Tennessee Animal Shelter Where A Puppy Was Found In A Freezer Is Allowed To Reopen.

The Board of a Tennessee Animal Shelter has decided to re-open the facility, even though it is under investigation from the District Attorney and Sheriff’s Office after a puppy was found alive in a freezer.

The Lauderdale County Animal Shelter has been closed for three days and one of four part-time employees has been suspended pending the results of the investigation.

A puppy was found by a volunteer still alive, curled up in the corner of the airtight, top-loading freezer at the Lauderdale County Animal Shelter in Ripley, Tennessee. The shelter’s freezer is used to store the bodies of euthanized dogs until they can be properly disposed of. (Scroll down for the video.)

The volunteer, Debbie Flowers, noticed the puppy’s pulse in a vein on the dog’s leg.

She immediately rushed Asher, a Weimeraner mix puppy, to an emergency veterinarian and a day later, after emergency care and IV fluids, he is doing much better. The dog is now expected to make a full recovery.

Expecting that the puppy had somehow survived euthanasia, veterinarians did blood tests to see whether sedatives or the drug used to put the dogs to sleep were still in his system.

Asher showed no traces of either, indicating to the vets that he had been intentionally placed in the freezer and left for dead — it was not an accident or a failed humane euthanasia attempt.

An investigation was promptly launched and a worker was suspended.

In the wake of the incident, Mayor Maurice Gaines proposed to have a camera system in place and the idea has been sent to County Commissioners.

But while the investigation is still pending, the Shelter Board Committee for the Lauderdale County Animal Shelter voted to re-open the shelter on Friday. Mayor Gaines said:

We had a couple of issues at hand that are under investigation, and therefore, we are not allowed to speak of those today.

Flowers attended the meeting and explained how she found the puppy.

She said:

I just stared for a minute and saw the pulse again, and I just said, “You got to be kidding.”

The committee members would not comment, due to the investigation. Pet lover Peggy Haynie said:

I doubt seriously if we’ll ever get any answers.

Jimmy Patterson with Helping Every Animal Rescue Team (HEART) said:

I just want to find the outcome of the investigation.
