A wedding is an occasion on which the two tying the knot have every reason to expect to be the focus of everyone’s attention. Well, that was not the case with these newlyweds.
As deflecting the limelight from the bride and groom is considered quite a social blunder, it should come as no surprise that a photograph of a wedding guest proposing to his girlfriend right in front of the newlyweds at their reception was promptly met with a mixture of widespread outrage and disbelief.
The image, posted on image sharing site Imgur earlier this week has already been viewed an astonishing 1.5 million times.
1. This picture of a wedding guest proposing to his girlfriend in front of the bride and groom at their reception has gone viral.
The image was also posted on community sharing site Reddit by an unnamed user, however he or she has since deleted the account, after a flurry of accusations of insensitivity and worse.
More than 1,500 comments on the image on Imgur are in equal measure hilarious and severe, as users voice their disbelief at the unidentified couple’s evident impoliteness.
The photo has captured a newlywed couple, also unidentified, smiling as a wedding guest gets down on one knee to offer an engagement ring to a visibly emotional woman.
2. “This is up there with my uncle giving my cousins a puppy at my birthday party”: The proposal has been overwhelmingly described as rude and inappropriate by internet commenters.
The image even reveals that the man had placed his bottle of beer on the table in front of the bride before making his proposal.
The newlyweds seem to be happy with the proceedings, though the bride’s smile is of dubious authenticity. However, the proposal has caused much discussion among Imgur commenters, as you can see in the screenshots.
It is unclear whether the wedding couple were aware that a proposal was going to be made during their reception or whether they have approved of it.
3. “The look on the bride’s face too, wow”: Reddit users express their outrage over the photo.
But one thing is very clear: the internet is outraged on the newlyweds’ behalf.
Imgur users have even figured out the perfect revenge: that the newlyweds announce that they are expecting during their friends’ wedding. That is, if they are still friends.
According to one expert, William Hanson, author of The Bluffer’s Guide To Etiquette:
As irritating as some happy couples can be on their wedding day, it is never acceptable to upstage the bride and groom by making a proposal of your own during their special day.
It doesn’t make it any better if you clear it in advance with the couple, you should not ask in the first place.
It is their day, for which they are most likely paying, and they call the shots.
Similarly, you should not upstage their wedding and the wedding breakfast in any other way, such as having a vocal argument with another guest, a public break-up with your plus one, or indeed being taken suddenly and violently sick during the speeches.
If you can’t stand the limelight being on other people then weddings are perhaps not for you.
4. Memes have already started popping up online in reaction to the proposal snap.
