Born without eyes, Smiley the Golden Retriever did not let the disability affect his sweet spirit and lovable personality and is leading a full and productive life.

Joanne George, a dog lover from Stouffville, Canada, adopted the beautiful dog from a local puppy mill. She believes that her decision to pair Smiley up with a deaf Great Dane called Tyler was the best one she has made. She told ABC News:

Tyler was so bouncy and crazy and happy go lucky and [Smiley] turned into the same dog.

1. Having been rescued from a ‘scary’ puppy mill, Smiley, who was born without eyes, has flourished into an energetic and adorable dog, who regularly visits hospitals, nursing homes and schools.

Smiley’s owner said she quickly realized the beautiful effect he had on people.

George added:

He came out from underneath the tables where he was always hiding.

One the retriever started interacting with people, George realized just how good he was at it.

She began taking Smiley to visit people who could use some cheering up at hospitals and schools.

Golden Retrievers are generally known as one of the most-loving breeds of dog.

Many people who have had contact with Smiley said they either didn’t realize or soon forgot that he had a disability.

One patient Smiley met at a nursing home was Teddy, who had no communication and could not speak at all. Staff had never even seen him smile.

But that all changed when Smiley came along. George recalled:

(Teddy) smiled when Smiley got into his vision.

Many people who have been visited by Smiley explained that they either didn’t realize or soon forgot that the canine had a disability.

Smiley is prone to run into things, but walks around very carefully.

Smiley takes high steps when he walks to feel out the ground around him.

Smiley often runs into things, but has learned to walk around very carefully.

When he walks, the retriever takes high steps, so he can feel the ground around him and see what obstacles lie in the way.

George explained that she taught him to follow her voice.

She added that it was very important for her dog to figure things out by himself and she’s been glad to let him learn that.

Owner Joanne George said the best thing she did was let Smiley work things out alone.

The gorgeous pup from Stouffville, Canada, was adopted from a puppy mill by local dog lover Joanne George.

George told ABC:

Somebody through St. John’s Ambulance is wanting to adopt a dog that’s blind.

I told her of all those things, don’t be his eyes, don’t run his life, don’t keep him in a bubble.

Not having eyes does not hold Smiley back from doing what he wants.

Born without eyes, Smiley relies on his sense of smell.
