The stomach-churning moment a man discovers a huge, live spider burrowed in his ear canal has been captured on video.

Bruce Branit, from Missouri, developed a painful ear infection after swimming at a lake in the northwestern part of the state.

The man used his phone to film his ear canal, in an effort to discover the source of the pain. Much to his horror, Bruce saw a large black spider crawling out, before hastily burrowing back inside his ear canal. (Scroll down for the video.)

Bruce posted the cringe-worthy video on YouTube on Friday and wrote in the caption:

Swam at Lake of the Ozarks last weekend and got a super painful ear infection, tried to use my phone camera to see if I could see anything… Found this!

The video promptly went viral and has so far (only a day later!) been viewed more than 163,000 times, with many viewers sharing their horror at Bruce’s ordeal.

3. He used his phone in an attempt to discover the source of the pain and to his horror, saw a black spider emerge, before hastily retreating back inside his ear canal.

Some commenters have expressed doubts as to the video’s authenticity, claiming it was made by using two separate videos put together. One YouTube viewer commented:

The legs returning back into the ear canal is a touch too smooth for real arachnid motion.

Another added:

The movements are way too smooth to be entirely realistic, a bug in real life would be much quicker, but the look of the model itself is incredibly convincing well done.
