Two men caught killing and stealing dogs in a Chinese village were beaten for nine hours and then had the dead canines’ bodies were hung around their necks.
The angry villagers then attacked the police officers who were sent to rescue the dog killers, beat them with metal bars and smashed up their police car, according to The People’s Daily.
The incident took place at around 7 am on Tuesday in Shaping village, Yizhang County, Hunan Province. The thieves were caught carrying two dead dogs, whom they had killed for their meat.
1. One of the dog thieves is seen tied to a tree in the Chinese village, with the body of one of the animals he allegedly killed.
A mob of outraged villagers quickly gathered and took justice into their own hands. The villagers brutally beat up the dog thieves, before tying the dead canines around their necks with the animals’ behinds pointing towards the criminals’ noses.
When they arrived at the scene, the police officers were confronted by a mob of villagers who were still attacking the dog killers.
They tried to put an end to the punishment, noting that mob justice was unacceptable under any circumstances.
However, when the officers attempted to take the two suspects into custody, the villagers prevented them from doing it, asking for 1 million Yuan ($161,000) compensation. Otherwise, they would not release the dog thieves.
2. The other thief is seen slumped against a car, surrounded by villagers. The pair were reportedly subjected to a brutal nine-hour beating.
Then, at around 4 pm, the mob attacked the police officers with metal bars and rocks and smashed their car’s windshield.
The villagers brought rocks onto the road and some of them even lay down under the police car, in an effort to prevent the criminals, who had already suffered serious injuries, from being taken away.
In an effort to prevent the situation from escalating, the officers attempted to calm the mob down by repeating yet again that mob justice was unacceptable, only for the villagers to respond with verbal abuse.
Authorities from the local Public Security Bureau, helped by Yizhang County officials, arrived at the village at around 6 pm and were finally able to get the situation under control.
3. The villagers then turned on police officers who had been sent to rescue the thieves, attacking them with metal bars and smashing up their patrol car.
The Yizhang Public Security Bureau said that their officers had done their work correctly when they were attacked by the villagers.
The authorities added that the officers had shown considerable restraint when the mob attacked them and noted that several villagers were guilty of illegal imprisonment, assault and obstructing police work.
The two dog killers have been taken into custody and the police is investigating the case.
4. The thieves were tied up with the animals’ behinds pointing towards their faces.
