An elderly Japanese man and the giant tortoise he takes out for languid walks in the streets of Tokyo have become a huge social media hit.
Astounded residents of Tokyo’s Tsukishima district have been busy taking pictures of the unusual pair and posting them on social media.
Unlike walking a dog, no leash is apparently needed, as the elderly pet walker hardly breaks a sweat as he strolls along Tokyo’s streets with his bulky reptilian friend.
The gentleman’s pet happens to be an African spurred tortoise and is quite large, as you can see in the images.
As you might guess, the laid-back pair have been getting a lot of attention wherever they go and people have loved the images of them posted online.
A fellow African spurred tortoise owner notes in a comment that the reptile must have been kindly and well cared for over many years, in order to develop the kind of bond where it will follow after its master.
The two were even seen in Ginza, which is quite a decent-length walk from their apparent neighborhood, even if you are not one of the slowest members of the animal kingdom.
