After an elephant died of a gut infection in Kenya’s savanna, her heartbroken five-month-old baby refused to leave his dead mother’s side, even as the rest of herd left.
The calf just hung around, touching and hugging his mom’s lifeless body, oblivious to the cold and the predators who were stalking him.
Luckily, keepers from the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT), Kenya Wildlife Service and Save the Elephants managed to tranquilize the baby and move him to the safety of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage. It will be a long recovery for Sokotei, as the baby was named, but I hope it will be a successful one.
