Investigators couldn’t believe the man didn’t know that his wife killed six of their babies and stored them in the garage, but had no evidence to pursue charges and were forced to conclude that he may have been so high on drugs that he didn’t know what he was doing.
Interrogated by detectives after the April 2014 discovery of the dead babies in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Darren West firmly denied any knowledge of his wife’s actions, according to public transcripts of police interviews.
The man admitted that he knew of two of Megan Huntsman’s pregnancies between 1996 and 2006, but said she told him that she had miscarriages. He insisted that he had no idea what his wife did with the fetuses. (Scroll down for the video.)

The reason West had no knowledge of his wife’s actions was that he spent most of the decade high on cocaine, methamphetamines or marijuana before being sent to federal prison on meth charges, the man said.
Huntsman is serving up to life in prison after pleading guilty to six counts of murder. She said at the time that she was too addicted to meth to be able to take care of the babies. A seventh baby’s body was discovered, but detectives determined that it was stillborn.
Huntsman said she herself was wondering how her husband wouldn’t realize that she was pregnant so many times from 1996 to 2006.
However, she told police that she hid the pregnancies from everyone, including her three young daughters.

With Huntsman denying that her husband knew about the babies’ deaths, the prosecutors had no case against him, even as they openly wondered how he could not have known, Utah County Deputy Attorney Jared Perkins said this week. He said:
Obviously, the practical, reasonable thought would be how in the world could he not have known?
That, I think, was the cause for the initial suspicion… But in the end, there just turned out to be no evidence that would implicate him.

While interrogating West in April, 2014, hours after he and one of his daughters found one of the bodies, Beckstrom said to him:
I can tell that you know about more than, than what you’re telling me.
What we want to do is we want to do what’s right, and we want to have closure for these children.
We want to have closure for your kids that are alive, for these babies’ grandparents. I mean these babies were in a garage for years.
West’s response was:
I never knew that, no I never knew that.
