For his achievement, Tank received top honors as well as a crown and a cape.

He will be presented later this week to more than 16,000 fans at the university’s Drake Relays to be honored as the event’s mascot, according to the contest’s website.

The canine beauty pageant, which featured 50 contestants, is the kickoff event for the Drake Relays track meet. Tank’s owner, Duane Smith, said:

He’s funny. He’s a real good one.

The pageant’s organizers narrowed a field of more than 100 hopeful dogs by a lottery held last month.

What judges were looking for in the canines were the slobber, drool and bulging, bloodshot eyes synonymous with English Bulldogs.

And that is precisely what they got from Tank who shares his house with a Pomeranian and a few turtles, after his owner found him on Craigslist a year ago.

In the event Tank is unable (or unwilling) to fulfill his mascot duties as the Drake Relays, fellow Des Moines Bulldog Steve will step in.

Steve came in second, even though at first he was so shy about the makeshift catwalk set up on Drake’s basketball court that his owner was forced to pick him up and put him down on it, much to the delight of the few thousand fans looking on.
