A multimillionaire mom, who was convicted of manslaughter for fatally poisoning her eight-year-old non-verbal son four years ago was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Gigi Jordan, 53, received close to the maximum sentence of 25 years allowed for manslaughter in the state of New York.
As he sentenced Jordan, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon scolded the woman for looking for ways to justify her actions and showing a complete lack of remorse in the years following the crime. (Scroll down for the video.)
1. Gigi Jordan, pictured in court on Thursday, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for killing her son in 2010. She said she took his life because she feared he would be left in the custody of his “abusive” father.
Judge Solomon said, according to The New York Daily News:
You would think in 2015, the defendant would say something like, “What a terrible thing I did. How could I kill my own son?”
But five years later — the same thing. It’s hard for me to believe.
Judge Solomon pointed out the other decisions Jordan could have taken after she claimed in court that the only way to protect her son Jude Mirra was to kill him.
2. Jordan is pictured with her son Jude Mirra, whom she fatally poisoned in a hotel room in 2010.
Judge Solomon said:
All of her money, all of her resources. She decided to kill him. There are so many different things she could have done.
She had all the money in the world to help Jude but she wound up taking his life.
The judge added that he did not believe Jordan tried to kill herself after giving her son his fatal overdose of prescription drugs, which she claimed.
3. In an interview with Dr. Phil last week, Jordan said she killed her son because she felt “incapable of protecting him”. She said she feared her ex-husband was going to kill her.
In her statement to the court, a tearful Jordan said that she “loved Jude more than anything in this world” and added:
He suffered so much and I’ll live with that guilt for the rest of my life. Not one day goes by that I don’t remember his beautiful face, his struggles and pain.
After a six-week trial last fall, jurors accepted Jordan’s defense that she had given her son a fatal dose while she was in a state of “extreme emotional disturbance”, according to The New York Post.
The defendant had said that she feared her ex-husband was going to kill her, which would have left her son in the custody of his biological father, who had sexually abused him — a claim denied by the boy’s father.
4. The socialite is pictured with Jude when he was a toddler. The eight-year-old boy, who had immune-system abnormalities and post-traumatic stress disorder, was non-verbal.
Prosecutors had claimed that Jordan killed her son after she realized that he would not get better.
If Jordan had been found guilty of murder, she would have faced a sentence of 15 years to life behind bars.
Jude, who was non-verbal, was at first thought autistic, however later he was diagnosed with immune-system abnormalities, post-traumatic stress disorder and other problems, his mother said.
Curiously, even though the young boy was unable to speak, his mother claimed that it was actually his idea that they take their lives — by typing messages on her phone. She says he asked her to use “a lot of drugs” so he would die peacefully. She claims he wrote:
I wish you do it soon. I’m scare u r too chicken.
5. Gigi Jordan to Dr. Phil: “I am not a cold-blooded murderer.”
Speaking to Dr. Phil last week, as she awaited the verdict, Jordan repeated that she had no option but to kill her son. She said:
To run would only make me more vulnerable. I felt completely incapable of protecting him. Whether that was rational or not, I can’t say, but I don’t think I’m a cold blooded murderer.
Asked if she had any regrets, Jordan replied:
I would have done a better job of ending my own life.
