A 20-year-old woman has been sentenced to six years in jail after she falsely accused a man of raping her and then leading a mob, which included her father, to beat him to death in the streets of Baltimore, Maryland, the Baltimore Sun reports.
Latiqwa Mayes was enraged that the victim — Donald Robinson — had not received a harsher sentence for breaking into her room at a boardinghouse months earlier and assaulting her friend. So, when she saw him walking down the street on September 2, 2013, she yelled: “He raped me! He’s a sex offender!” Her father, Willie Mayes, then rushed out and a group of teenagers playing basketball nearby joined him to pin Robinson down.
A surveillance camera caught the attack and showed passers-by joining the attack to kick and punch Robinson as Latiqwa Mayes pepper-sprayed him. Robinson managed to get away from the scene but hours later he fell ill and was later pronounced dead in hospital. The autopsy found that the beating was the cause of the death.
Slamming Latiqwa Mayes, who has been held in solitary confinement since September 2013, Judge Timothy Doory said Robinson’s offense did “not justify a call to the community to impose physical, violent retribution”. Defense attorney Joshua Insley argued that Robinson was a dangerous sex offender who should have been kept off the streets and violated his parole. However, Judge Doory dismissed the argument, insisting that the father and daughter “went too far”.
Latiqwa and Willie Mayes both pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and were each sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, Latiqwa will only serve six and Willie will serve two, with the other years suspended. (Scroll down for the video.)
