The sickening moment a young woman set her Staffordshire Bull Terrier-type of dog on a kitten and laughed as the canine mauled it to death was captured on video.
Stephanie Curwen was captured on surveillance camera in July last year, walking her dog Duke near her home in St. Annes, Lancashire, in the U.K., when her neighbor’s black cat showed up.
When she saw her dog lunge towards the feline, the 24-year-old woman, who kept her dog on a leash, released him and then she laughed as he chased the Bengal cat.
Duke managed to claw the cat, named Reggie, down from the top of a gate, and carried him in his mouth until passers-by intervened.
Reggie later died from two puncture wounds in his neck, Blackpool Magistrates’ Court heard.
Curwen, a mother-of-three, walked free after she admitted causing an animal to fight and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.
Earlier, the court heard how Curwen made no attempt to contain her dog when he lunged at the cat. RSPCA prosecutor Jonathan Fail said:
Throughout the whole of the attack, the female made no attempt to stop it.
In effect she seemed to be encouraging the whole incident.
1. Stephanie Curwen laughed as her dog, thought to be a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, jumped up repeatedly to try to get to the cat.
The attack was finally ended by neighbor Craig Hargreaves who was able to pull Duke away with just “one finger”, the court heard. Fail said:
He pulled the dog back with one finger by the collar. No resistance was fought.
There was no growling or suggestion of aggression and he indicated to the woman that she should put the dog on a lead.
However, when Hargreaves picked up the feline, he only felt “two heartbeats” before he died.
Curwen told investigators that she never thought her dog would catch the cat to harm it.
2. Stephanie Curwen, a 24-year-old mother, was spared jail but banned from owning or keeping pets for 10 years.
David Charnley, Curwen’s attorney, said:
Clearly this is a very sad and tragic case which couldn’t and shouldn’t have happened.
This defendant has learned a very solitary lesson. She said she didn’t expect to happen what did happen.
Curwen has been ordered to pay £200 ($300) costs and an £80 ($120) victim surcharge. She has also been banned from owning or keeping animals for 10 years.
3. Reggie, a Bengal kitten, died from a punctured lung. The tiny kitten was chased and killed by Curwen’s dog.
For her part, Reggie’s owner said that the dog’s owner should have gone to jail. Lesley-Anne Brockleburst said:
I’m happy about the ban but she should have gone to prison for what she did.
Hopefully then it might sink in what she did, and how cruel it was. She’s not sorry for her actions, she hasn’t gone out of her way to apologize to me and my family.
She seemed to be getting a lot of pleasure out of it so maybe it’s not the first time sheΓÇÖs done something like this.
4. The kitten died in the attack. His owner’s neighbor is filmed carrying his little body back to their home.
