Four Swedish cops on vacation in New York City ended up doing some unscheduled police work when they answered the call of duty on a Manhattan subway train earlier this week.
The officers were riding the subway on their way to see Les Misérables on Broadway, according to DNA Info, when they rushed in to put an end to a brutal assault on a crowded rush-hour 6 train. Makrus Åsberg, a 25-year-old officer with the police Uppsala, Sweden, told The New York Post:
We came here for vacation. We’ve been here one day. We’re no heroes, just tourists.
1. The Swedish cops (pictured left to right) Erik Näslund, 26, Samuel Kvarzell, 25, Makrus Åsberg, 25, and Eric Jansberger, 28, said they were just answering the call of duty.
Mr. Asberg, helped by Erik Naslund, Samuel Kvarzell and Eric Jansberger, intervened to subdue an angry homeless man who was viciously assaulting another passenger on the train.
The Scandinavian Samaritans put an end to the violence and held the attacker until the NYPD arrived at the scene, according to the NY Post.
Video from the incident (watch below) has captured Kvarzell and Asberg holding the man down and attempting to calm him as he screams.
2. Three of the Swedes tended to the aggressor (background) and held him for the police, while the fourth stayed with the victim, who had been badly beaten in the fight.
The attacker is heard screaming:
I can’t breath! I can’t breath!
Mr. Asberg replies:
Take it easy, just calm down.
3. The Nordic tourists kept both men calm until NYPD cops showed up to sort out the scene.
The Scandinavians allegedly stepped forward after hearing a conductor frantically yelling over the intercom:
Are there any police officers on the train?
As the train was pulling into the Bleecker Street station, the four Swedes found a homeless man beating up another passenger in the next car.
The victim’s mouth was bleeding, he seemed to be badly beaten and was not defending himself, the Nordic cops told the NY Post.
4. “We’re no heroes, just tourists”, the men said.
One of the friends put the attacker in an arm lock, while two other Swedes held him down to the floor of the car. Kvarzell, 25, told DNA Info:
One of the guys tried to wrestle us so [we] wrestled him to the floor until the police came.
We don’t have authority or anything but we thought somebody might need help.
Once the NYPD arrived and took custody of the attacker, the four tourists were free to go and see Les Misérables.
