A man made a very lucky escape from a zoo’s bear enclosure after climbing into it, approaching the predator and hitting her after she tried to bite his arm.
The daredevil’s stunt was captured by a passer-by who noticed the man climbing over the fence and into a female bear’s pen at a zoo in Warsaw, Poland.
The uninvited visitor then walked toward the animal, who lost no time in grabbing him by the arm until the man fought back, punched her and ran away. (Click through for the video.)
The zoo’s bear enclosure runs along a busy street in the Polish capital and a number of stunned passers-by watched in horror and bewilderment, most of them fearing the worst.
One of the onlookers subsequently shared pictures of the encounter on social media.
wrote that he suspected that the man, who was visiting the zoo with a friend, was drunk or on drugs. Otherwise, he couldn’t explain his behavior.
Maria Krakowiak, who heads the predatory animals at the zoo, said:
We do not know how the man escaped but she grabbed his arm. It then looks like he tried to hit her.
The enclosure is heavily ringed off and no one in their right mind would try and get in there. What his thinking was, we have no idea. He survived but we don’t know where he went.
Police are now looking for the intruder and a spokesman said that they have found a bracelet which they believe belonged to him, as well as traces of his blood.
The zoo has three bears which it received from a circus several years ago. Krakowiak said:
Sabina is the bear this man approached and he’s lucky because she is generally friendly.
Perhaps that’s why he survived — because she is more familiar with people. If it had been one of the others the story would probably be different.
