This Police Officer Is Suing Starbucks For Burning Himself After He Spilled A Cup Of Free Coffee.

A North Carolina police officer who got a free coffee at Starbucks is suing the company for $50,000 after he spilled it on himself and got burned.

The lawsuit states that Matthew Kohr, a lieutenant for the special operations division of the Raleigh Police Department, received a cup of coffee at a Starbucks store in January 2012.

When Kohr went to pick up the cup, the lid popped up and the cup folded in on itself, causing the hot coffee to spill on Kohr’s thigh and groin area. (Scroll down for the video.)

Kohr claims that the burn aggravated the Crohn’s disease he is suffering from and caused him to have surgery which led to the removal of a portion of his large intestine, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit goes on to allege that Kohr was not the only one who suffered from the incident, because the officer’s wife has lost her “intimate partner”.

The couple are seeking $50,000, including damages, attorney fees and medical costs, from the Seattle-based coffee giant.

A Starbucks spokesperson insisted that the safety of the company’s customers and employees “is our top priority”, however the coffee giant has denied any wrongdoing. He said:

We believe our store partners did nothing wrong and are prepared to present our case at trial.

The Starbucks barista who served the coffee to the officer, the branch manager and the paper cup company itself were all initially named as defendants in the case, however it was later amended to name Starbucks as the sole defendant.

An attorney representing the company argued in her opening statement on Tuesday that it was Kohr who was negligent, adding that it was the officer’s pre-existing condition which caused his issues.
