A dog named Callie is recovering after she was thrown out of a moving pick-up truck earlier this month, in Anderson County, South Carolina, and rescued in a terrible condition.
Animal control officers picked the little dog up the from the road and, after a a five-day stray hold at a shelter, took Callie to Boxer Butts & Other Mutts, a non profit rescue group. Its founder Heidi Schermerhorn-Wagner said:
I was sent her picture and wanted to pick her up that day. But even though witnesses saw her being tossed out like a piece of trash, she had to stay at the shelter on a five-day stray hold.

Callie is showing her appreciation to her carer Heidi Schermerhorn-Wagner.
Callie was in a terrible state when picked up after the incident.
Callie’s rescuers had to wait for Callie’s brutalized body to catch up.
She had a severe skin infection. Her body was riddled with deep wounds.
“Our vet said it was the worst case of mange he had ever seen”, Schermerhorn-Wagner said.
“She was way too thin and her little spirit was broken”, Schermerhorn-Wagner added.
Callie seemed to be all too aware of her condition.
“At first all she wanted to do was lay curled up in a ball”, Schermerhorn-Wagner said.
“She is looking a little better every day, she had an off evening yesterday but has done well today and you will see her personality shine in the news interview. This little girl may have lived through hell but she is a SURVIVOR.”, Schermerhorn-Wagner wrote on Facebook on 11 August.
“Our beautiful girl Callie continues to improve daily and I can’t even put into words what a love this girl is, it is so apparent she went without a loving human touch for a long time because she just wants to be held and loved which she gets a lot of. Today she actually tried to play — how amazing and heartwarming. We are continuing with her care instructed by her vet and we are watching her blossom. We still have a long ways to go but everyday there is improvement. Amazing little girl with a absolute amazing spirit.”, Schermerhorn-Wagner wrote on Facebook in another update on 14 August.
“The blur you see behind our sweet girl Callie is her tail that never stops wagging these days. She is learning to be a puppy and she is loving toys and most of all she is loving all the attention. This little girl is amazing and has so much spirit. Her skin continues to improve but we are still having to be super careful because her skin still rips open if she starts to play too hard or if she is rubbing up against you to hard. She is continuing with her daily baths and we go for a recheck next week.”, the update on 17 August read.
Callie is now looking much healthier, though it will be at least four months before Callie is ready for adoption.
