Two Men Saw A Pod Of Enormous Whales In The DIstance And Stopped Their Boat’s Engine To Take A Look. Then The Humpbacks Decided To Come Closer…

Svein Aasjord and Trond Ivarsoy were out in a cold fjord on Norway’s Whale Island when they noticed a pod of humpback whales. They stopped the engine to enjoy the view when a fascinating thing happened: the humpbacks came over to the men. But it was not a social call. The fjords are full of herring now, which attracts the humpback whales and they work together to chase herring. Using sound and bubbles, the enormous mammals are pushing the herring shoals close together and so they swim right up underneath them with open mouths. We hear Svein say:

It’s bubbling! I’m feeling the bubbles hit us. A ton of bubbles! Can you see them?

The two men know exactly what that means: herring shoals are on the rise underneath them. The bubbles are produced as air is emitted from thousands of small swim bladders. Svein told TV2 that the two men felt “like being in a glass of cola”. We then see clouds of whale breath coming closer and closer and Trond begins to laugh nervously. He says:

I don’t want to be closer than that.

But then come the whales, right around the two men’s boat. Despite being nervous, Trond manages to shoot all the time. The whales are right next to the boat, at one point one of them swimming right under the boat, with its tail on one side and head on the other, but it never touched it. Then the sea was quiet again, and the whales swam away in the distance. (Scroll down for the video.)
