The chilling text messages one Texas man sent to his ex-wife before strangling their two young children were showed in court on Friday.
Gabriel Armandariz, 32, of Graham, Texas, stands accused of murdering his two sons, Gatlin, 2, and Luke, who was just 8-months-old at the time the crime was committed in April 2011.
Armandariz allegedly strangled his children shortly after he sent several bizarre and chilling text messages to their mother Lauren Smith. Pretending to be his new girlfriend, Armandariz texted to his ex about his plans to kill the boys because of her partying ways.
1. Gabriel Armandariz reportedly sent text messages threatening to kill his two sons to the boys’ mother Karen Smith (below) shortly before strangling them.
2. Gatlin, 2, and Luke, who was just 8-months-old (below), were found dead in a crawl space in April 2011.
In one of the texts Armandariz sent to Smith, just hours before the boys were murdered, he wrote:
I commend the spirits of these two boys to the Lord. I would much rather be with them than to be out partying with friends
Shortly afterward, he followed with another text, which read:
Look, I’m trying to offer you another opportunity to see our children. But as usual you would much rather be with your friends.
3. In one text massage Armandariz wrote, ‘I commend the spirits of these two boys to the Lord. I would much rather be with them than to be out partying with friends’.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the prosecutors in the case believed Smith was unaware that the texts were coming from Armandariz. She actually believed that they were coming from the woman her ex was dating at the time.
This claims appears to be backed up by Smith’s responses to the texts. In one she wrote:
If I were you I’d get the hell away from him. Looks can be deceiving.
On the day the children died, Armandariz also sent a picture to Smith that seemed to show Luke dead and hanging from the closet with a rope wrapped around his neck.
The chilling image was followed by the final text, which showed the two children alive and lying next to him, and read:
We love u, goodbye.
4. Armandiriz also reportedly sent a photo to Smith of Luke dead and hanging from the ceiling of the closet with a rope around his neck.
Lt. James Reeves revealed earlier this week that after seeing the image of Luke dangling from the closet, police officers rushed to Armandariz’s home, in the hope of saving Gatlin. He said:
We were operating on the belief that Luke was dead. We didn’t know about the older son.
And then they found a tarp in the space underneath the home. Lt. Reeves said:
We saw four little feet inside the tarp. One of the feet had a shoe on it.
It was a little camel tennis shoe and that’s how we knew. We never laid eyes on the bodies other than to see those feet.
5. Prosecutors claim that Armandariz strangled his two children using the handle of a cloth grocery bag.
Prosecutors claim that Armandariz strangled his two children using the handle of a cloth grocery bag. He then put their bodies in a pillowcase which he then wrapped in a tarp and placed into the crawl space under his house.
Armandariz’s odd 911 call shortly after he killed the children was also played for the jury earlier this week. In them, he told the operator:
My girlfriend asked me to kill my babies. What was I supposed to do? My girlfriend told me to kill both of them. What was I supposed to do? I hate her, I hate her, I hate her so much. I’m so scared now.
The prosecution is seeking the death penalty in the case.
6. Armadiriz later told a 911 operator that his girlfriend made him strangle the boys.
