A Reddit user has shared an amazing timelapse video he had shot of the Milky Way. It is ineffably beautiful, yes, but this is not the reason it caught fire on social media. No, it was something that briefly appeared in the skies that got everyone’s attention.

So, here is the Redditor in question — Wes Eisenhauer — setting it up:

I shot a time lapse of the Milky Way the other night. Something appears to hit the atmosphere and explode around the 4 second mark. Any ideas what it is?

I will venture no guess. Instead, here is one comment which seems to have been accepted by most viewers:

My first guess would be a bolide, or a large meteor — one that’s bigger than the typical grain of sand, and too small to make it to Earth. It enters and heats and pops. It could also be a bit of large space junk, a spent rocket stage or the like. Either way, yes, it probably came from space.
