The Jamala Wildlife Lodge at the National Zoo and Aquarium in Canberra, Australia’s political capital, has just opened its doors this week to offer its guests a taste of Africa from the comfort of luxury accommodation.

The resort doubles as a zoo to give guests the opportunity to wake up to lions, have a lunch with lemurs and even to share a bath with bears — all that from the comfort of a unique new lodging experience.

With 18 rooms, ranging from giraffe treehouses to jungle bungalows, and spread across three locations in the zoo, the resort offer an intimate experience with all kinds of wildlife.

Jamala Wildlife Lodge owner and operator Richard Tindale says that the resort was set up in an effort to educate gusts about helping the survival of many of the world’s endangered species.

Funds from the “once in a lifetime” Jamala Wildlife Lodge will be funnelled right back into the breeding programs run by the zoo, Mr. Tindale added. (Scroll down for the video.)

Mr. Tindale told The Chronicle:

It’s great for the animals; they’re going to get more space. It’s great for the viewing public; they’re going to get more things to see. It will be great for tourism and just for the local community.

The Ushaka Lodge, which can accommodate up to 26 people, is built around the monkey enclosure and has a built-in aquarium that offers private views of some of the zoo’s sharks. The main room here is a glass U-shaped, which allows guests the opportunity to sleep, eat, and relax just inches from their very own African safari.

Just feet from the edge of Lake Burley Griffin, the indoor and outdoor entertaining areas offer incredible views across the lake to Black Mountain.

6. ‘There’s a room with its own little jetty and it comes out over the shark tank here and so the people who stay in that room will be able to go to their bedroom and pat that shark,’ Mr. Tindale said.

Mr. Tindale said:

There’s a room with its own little jetty and it comes out over the shark tank here and so the people who stay in that room will be able to go to their bedroom and pat that shark. The whole idea is when people are here it’s very interactive — wherever they go they’re going to have an animal pretty close to them.

The Savannah Lodge features six king-size bedrooms, communal dining, open bar, two spacious lounge areas, a private Aquarium, outdoor terrace, as well as a pool and spa.

The Giraffe Treehouses are placed among the giraffe enclosures and the Jungle Bungalows are luxurious individual suites that adjoin lion, cheeta, brown bear or Malaysian sun bear enclosures.

The all-inclusive packages provide a private tour of the zoo and several immersive dining opportunities, such as a three-course meal overlooking the natural habitat of lions and hyenas.
